I’ve been working on a project for the Commodore 64 Ultimate. For this project, I’ve been writing in 6502 assembly, which has been fun. But I sometimes do miss having things like if-statements, for-loops and structs. Which got me thinking… I’m not programming on the C64U itself. I am programming on my Macbook Pro. Why couldn’t we use a higher-level language? Of course, the obvious answer here is just use C or something like Prog8. And there are more than a few C compilers for the 6502 and some try to squeeze as much performance out of the 6502 as they can (shout out to OSCAR64). But, in my opinion, no matter how much you optimize your compiler, C just isn’t a great match for the 1-workhorse-register, 256-byte-stack, 8-bit CPU. ...
